The Mechanics of Combined Ratings
VA law requires that disability ratings be combined using a formula that accounts for the "efficiency" of the body remaining after each rating is applied. For example, a veteran with a 50% rating is considered 50% efficient. An additional 30% rating is then applied to that remaining 50%, resulting in a 15% increase (50% + 15% = 65%), which rounds to 70%.
VA combines disability ratings instead of simply adding them together. The highest rating is applied first, then each additional rating is applied to what remains. The final combined value is rounded to the nearest 10%.
